Research statement: My research focus is developing project to determine the presence of Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Salmonella in the air of meat harvesting establishments and to compare and evaluate the reliability of real-time PCR method versus Crystal Diagnostic CDx system for detecting low levels of STEC and Salmonella in the air of beef facility. The outcomes of this study will improve sanitation program in meat industry. Studying the presence of STEC and Salmonella in the air of harvesting establishments at various stages will permit the identification of critical areas and potential for spreading of these pathogens. Then, the effectiveness of plant sanitation programs can be enhanced.
